Natan Sharansky was born in Donetsk, Ukraine in 1948. He was a spokesman for the human rights movement and a leader in the struggle for the right of Soviet Jews to immigrate to Israel. Sharansky was imprisoned in a Soviet Gulag for nine years after requesting permission to make aliya and was released following a massive global campaign by world Jewry and international leaders.

He made aliya on the day of his release and became a politician and leader in Israel. The author of three books, Sharansky remains a champion of the right of all people to live in freedom and believes advancing human rights is critical to world peace and security.
