Why Choose Year Course?

Spending a year in Israel between high school and college is one of the most memorable life experiences you will have. Just ask any of our nearly 10,000 alumni!

You’ll engage with life-changing social action issues, discover projects you care passionately about, and develop the skills to make an impact. You’ll learn valuable leadership skills to take back to your community and campus, and have the opportunity to design and run peer-led projects. Be a part of a community of chanichim and staff who are committed to supporting and challenging each other to make the most of every single day on Year Course.

Year Course is staffed by highly qualified educators, counselors and tour guides who are dedicated to a quality program of formal and informal education within a supportive, university-level environment. We have four major goals:

1. To enable participants to grow as human beings

  • Strengthening each participant’s self confidence, independence and sense of responsibility.
  • Using Israel as a laboratory for teaching participants about tolerance and pluralism, and by introducing them to a myriad of different communities across the country.
  • Providing a sound, supportive environment in which participants can explore, grow and mature during a dynamic year in Israel.

2. To enable participants to grow as Jews

  • Instilling in them the values of g’milut chasadim (acts of giving and generosity), tikkun olam (world repair), family, and community.
  • Improving participants’ literacy in Jewish history and tradition, Hebrew and contemporary Israeli culture through accredited, college-level courses.
  • Fostering a positive sense of Jewish identity and Jewish community.

3. To enable participants to grow as Zionists

  • Providing a comprehensive Israel experience, establishing knowledge of and connections to the country’s geography, language, people, history and contemporary life.
  • Teaching Zionist thought, the history of Israeli society, culture and politics.
  • Discussing the centrality of Israel in Jewish life and responsibility toward the land of Israel.

4. To enable participants to grow as leaders

  • Improving their leadership skills and awareness of those abilities.
  • Preparing and encouraging participants to return home and become active members, leaders and Israel advocates within their Jewish communities.
  • Promoting active participation within Young Judaea and within Jewish life on campus.

My son is finally home with so many pictures and stories. He looks older and wiser and taller. His experience with Young Judaea will help create informed decisions as time goes on. The practical skills of travel, embracing other cultures, expanding your comfort zone and being far away from your regular family will all serve him well for the rest of his life. Thank you and all the others who made this such a priceless experience!

Thank you a thousand times for the support you gave to Rose during her Young Judaea Year Course in Israel! It’s wonderful to have her home. She looks like the same girl on the outside but I know that her numerous experiences and personal challenges have reshaped her in a positive way. She made lasting friends and now has a strong love for Israel that I think will last a lifetime. She’s already talking about going back as soon as she can!

Naomi Berlin, Miami, FL

We defied society and chose instead to spend a year immersing ourselves in a voyage through Israel. We only live life once, so thank you for helping me live it!

Adi Genosar, Atlanta, GA

On Year Course, I was afforded the opportunity to volunteer with Magen David Adom for a short period. MDA was never something I saw myself being able to do. I knew I wanted to be a part of something bigger than me, bigger than anything I have ever been involved in, something worthy of not just me but others around me. The experiences and friendships I’ve made have left an everlasting impact on my life and changed me as a person. MDA has really taught me to appreciate life. It showed me how to be a part of a team, how to be a leader and, most importantly, how valuable a person can be…including me!
